Snowshoeing
We will be offering snowshoe trekking weeks in the Spring of 2006. Based in the Eastern Pyrenees, we will use hotel or gite accommodation for a week of day trips into the winter wonderland!
Snowshoeing is booming in this area, for good reason. The equipment is light and very easy to get used to. Snowshoeing is easy and fun and much easier than walking when moving over soft snow. It does not require the balance and coordination or learning curve of skiing, so is open to anyone who is reasonably fit, and needs no prior experience to enjoy to the full. It enables us to get relatively quickly into wilderness areas and move very quietly, enhancing our chances of seeing the wildlife, such as isard (chamois), sanglier (wild boar), marmots, and possibly ibex.
All equipment will be supplied.
Ski du fond (cross-country skiing)
Ski du fond involves using very lightweight skis and boots to tour maybe ten or fifteen kilometres in a day. The skiing is on prepared tracks on forest trails. It is quite easy to learn and get going, though takes a bit longer to get really efficient. It is open to anyone who is reasonably fit, with or without previous experience of skiing, and is very popular in this area.
There are designated ski du fond areas in the Eastern Pyrenees, which include some remarkable scenery of great beauty. Winter days are often windless and sunny and cold is usually not an issue! Currently we cannot officially guide groups, but we can help you with local knowledge, discount insurance, getting to the good spots, and accompanying you and your group.
Please note, if you are an experienced Scottish xc-skier, things are more regimented over here. You will be required to pay a very modest daily fee, which covers the track cutting and maintenance, production of route maps, and the services of the snowmobile patrol (whether you want them or not!)
We will arrange rental of high quality equipment for you
Please email us if you wish us to organise a ski du fond week for you.
